Seeing The Three Ranges<\/h1>\n<\/div>

Artists have squinted for centuries and for good reason:<\/p>\n

WE SQUINT TO SEE THE THREE RANGES AND\u00a0SIMPLIFY SHAPES OF TONE.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Arrange three props on a middle tone (meaning a middle\u00a0tone backdrop) and light them with standard lighting.<\/p>\n

1. Squint with both eyes, then try it with one eye closed.\u00a0Use whichever way works best for you.<\/p>\n

Much depends on how we actually squint. How much we\u00a0narrow our eyes governs how we see.<\/p>\n

2. Observe the setup while gradually narrowing your eyes. As you narrow them more, notice how the tones darken, edges blur, colors dim and minor details dissolve\u2014but notice also how areas of tone, though darker, become a bit easier to distinguish. Observe carefully and you will see.<\/p>\n

3. Observe parts of the setup without squinting and then squint. Alternate between the two until you\u2019re certain you see areas of tone a bit more clearly when squinting.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Making tones as dark as they are when you squint is, of\u00a0course, incorrect. Soon you will learn how to adjust for this\u00a0to make the right tones. But, for now, your sole objective is\u00a0learning how TO SEE CLEARLY A SUBJECT\u2019S LIGHT,\u00a0MIDDLE, AND DARK RANGES.<\/p>\n<\/div>
